Overview
Registered in 2003, 'Java' is a sport of *Hosta* 'Brim Cup' that forms a slow-growing, medium-sized mound. Its most distinctive features are deeply cupped, broadly ovate leaves with a blue-green surface, dark green flat margins, and a glaucous bloom on the underside.
In the Garden
'Java' reaches approximately 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height and 45 inches (114.3 cm) in diameter, with a dense, mound-like habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-green hostas, and its moderate corrugation and light waviness add textural interest. This cultivar is well-suited for shaded borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in mixed perennial beds; its medium size makes it adaptable for grouping with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. 'Java' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
