Overview

Registered in 2005 by originators H. Sugita and P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'James Monroe' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with greenish-yellow margins and a pronounced glaucous bloom on the upper surface. The leaf blades are ovate with flat bases, cupped and folded, with wavy, corrugated texture and slightly rippled margins.

In the Garden

'James Monroe' forms a mound 23 inches (58.4 cm) tall and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green leaf centers contrast with the light greenish-yellow margins. The 30- to 35-inch (76–89 cm) light green scapes bear flowers in midsummer. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials; its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts or woodland gardens.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Fertilize in early spring as shoots emerge. Like most hostas, 'James Monroe' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
