Overview
Registered in 2005 by H. Sugita and P. Ruh, *Hosta* 'James Madison' is a small-sized variegated cultivar derived from a cross between *H. longipes* (pod parent) and *H. pycnophylla* (pollen parent). Its leaves are medium green with slightly rippled margins, ovate with a tapered base, and exhibit a slightly shiny upper surface with a very shiny underside; the blades are lightly twisted, lightly folded, and moderately wavy.
In the Garden
'James Madison' forms a mound 15 inches (38.1 cm) tall and 23.5 inches (59.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of most hostas, and is well suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture given its small size. Companion plants such as ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials complement its restrained habit.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor and protect as needed.
