Overview
Registered in 2009 by an unknown hybridizer, *Hosta* 'Jack's Discovery' is a medium-sized cultivar resulting from an open pollination of *Hosta* 'Galaxy'. It is visually distinguished by its nearly round, medium green leaves with a dull surface, each bordered by a 1.0 to 1.3 cm wide, golden yellow, slightly rippled margin.
In the Garden
'Jack's Discovery' forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching 30.5 cm (12 in) in height and 58.4 cm (23 in) in diameter. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its green-and-gold variegation provides subtle contrast. Its medium size makes it appropriate for the middle of a shaded border or as an accent in a woodland garden; it pairs well with ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials. The plant's slow growth rate and compact habit also suit it for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
