Overview

Registered in 1974 by A. Johnson, 'Itasca' is a small hosta of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its narrow, lance-shaped leaves that display green streaking within a green margin, creating a variegated effect on a compact plant.

In the Garden

'Itasca' reaches approximately 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height with a spread typical of small hostas. Its leaves are 7 inches (17.8 cm) long and 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide, with seven pairs of veins. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, as is standard for variegated hostas, and is well-suited to rock gardens, container plantings, or the front of shaded borders. Its small stature makes it an effective groundcover when planted in groups, and it pairs well with other small perennials such as ferns or heucheras.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Itasca' is susceptible to slug damage and may require protection in areas where slugs are prevalent; deer may also browse the foliage in typical hosta-growing zones.
