Overview
Registered in 2016 from unknown parentage, 'Island Heartbreaker' is a large hosta distinguished by its broadly ovate, blue-green leaves with cordate bases and lightly corrugated surfaces. The foliage is dull on the upper side with a slightly shiny underside, and the flat margins are a slightly paler blue-green.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature size of 23 inches (58.4 cm) in height and 52 inches (132.1 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit and fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for blue-leaved hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials. Its large, heart-shaped leaves make it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
