Overview

Registered in 1997 by A. Malloy, this small hosta cultivar is a hybrid distinguished by its green leaves with white margins—a color pattern that reverses the typical hosta variegation of a lighter center and darker edge. The white leaf centers are framed by flat green margins 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) wide, creating a crisp, two-toned appearance on a compact mound.

In the Garden

Hosta 'Island Charm' reaches 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) in height and spreads to 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, forming a moderate-growing, mound-like clump. Its small stature and dull leaf surfaces make it suitable for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, and shade-tolerant perennials such as heuchera or tiarella. Typical hosta-growing conditions—partial to full shade—are recommended, as the white leaf centers may scorch in direct sun.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage; monitor regularly and use appropriate controls if needed.
