Overview
Registered in 1992 by K. Anderson, this small hosta cultivar is distinguished by its narrow, dark green leaves with white margins that often exhibit streaking. The leaf blades reach 7 inches (17.8 cm) in length and only 1.25 inches (3.2 cm) in width, with 4 to 5 vein pairs, giving the plant a ribbon-like appearance.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'Irish Ribbons' forms a compact clump 11 inches (27.9 cm) tall and 13.5 inches (34.3 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or miniature hostas. Its narrow leaves and compact habit allow it to fit into tight spaces where larger cultivars would overwhelm.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and take protective measures if necessary.
