Overview
Registered in 1994 as a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Lancifolia', 'Irish Mist' is a small, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its green leaves with creamy white margins. The leaf blades are dull above, slightly shiny beneath, and possess a rounded base with slightly rippled margins, reaching 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) in length and 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) in width with 8 to 9 vein pairs.
In the Garden
'Irish Mist' forms a compact mound 9 inches (22.9 cm) in both height and diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with small ferns, heucheras, or other miniature hostas. Its modest size also suits trough gardens or shaded nooks where space is limited.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Irish Mist' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor foliage regularly and employ barriers or repellents as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
