Overview

Registered in 2007, *Hosta* 'Irish Luck' is a large, upright variegated cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, with *Hosta* 'Invincible' as the pod parent. Its most distinctive visual features are the very shiny, dark green leaf margins with a lightly wavy edge, contrasting with a thick, heavy substance that gives the foliage substantial texture.

In the Garden

'Irish Luck' reaches approximately 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 45 inches (114.3 cm) in scape height, making it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade, as typical for hostas. The large, ovate leaves with cordate bases and 9 to 10 vein pairs create a bold, upright presence that pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial leaf substance suggests good tolerance for typical garden conditions, though it is not suited for container culture due to its large size.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Irish Luck' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
