Overview
Registered in 1996, *Hosta* 'Irish Hills' is a giant sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance'. Its most distinctive feature is the dark green, slightly rippled leaf margins that contrast with the lighter center, combined with a very shiny upper leaf surface.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound reaching 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, where its glossy foliage can develop without scorching. The large leaf size and mound-like habit make it suitable as a specimen plant or as part of a mixed shade border, though its substantial dimensions require ample space.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through cultural or physical controls.
