Overview

Registered in 1998 by Peter Ruh, 'Irische See' is a small, mound-forming hybrid derived from *H. 'Tardiflora'* (seed parent) and *H. 'Elegans'* (pollen parent). The cultivar is distinguished by its blue-green foliage with slightly rippled margins, a dull upper surface, and a glaucous bloom on the underside.

In the Garden

'Irische See' reaches 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height and 22 inches (55.9 cm) in diameter, forming a compact mound suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or small woodland perennials. Its slow growth rate makes it appropriate for small spaces or trough gardens.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While 'Irische See' shows typical hosta resistance to deer, slug control may be necessary in damp conditions to protect the foliage.
