Overview

Registered in 1978 by breeder P. Aden, this small-sized hosta cultivar resulted from a cross between *H.* 'Flamboyant' (pod parent) and *H.* 'High Fat Cream' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its multi-colored leaf margins, which contrast with the leaf center, and its compact, mounded habit.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'Intrigue' reaches a mature diameter of 12 inches (30.5 cm) and a height of 15 inches (38.1 cm), with leaves measuring 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 4.5 inches (11.4 cm) wide, featuring eight vein pairs. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its small size makes it well-suited for rock gardens, shade borders, or container plantings. Compatible companions include ferns, heucheras, and other small-leaved shade perennials that do not overwhelm its compact form.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in areas where these pests are prevalent.
