Overview

Registered in 1998 by Japanese breeder H. Sugita, *Hosta* 'Inland Sea' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar derived from a cross between *H. kiyusumiensis* (pod parent) and *H. pycnophylla* (pollen parent). The plant is distinguished by its very shiny, dark green leaf surfaces and undersides, with flat margins and rounded leaf bases.

In the Garden

This cultivar forms a mound-like habit reaching approximately 17 inches (43.2 cm) in height and 45 inches (114.3 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its glossy foliage provides textural contrast when paired with finer-textured perennials such as ferns or heucheras. The plant's medium size makes it suitable for border fronts or as a specimen in shaded beds.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in garden settings.
