Overview
Registered in 1999 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Crowned Imperial', 'Imperial Potentate' is a medium-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with creamy white, slightly rippled margins. The leaf surface is slightly shiny above with a glaucous bloom beneath, and the margins measure approximately 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) wide, occasionally showing streaking.
In the Garden
'Imperial Potentate' forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 17 inches (43.2 cm) in height and 28 inches (71.1 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical of most hostas, where the blue-green leaf color and white margins remain most stable. The medium size suits mixed shade borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer exposures, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'Imperial Potentate' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
