Overview

Registered in 2009, 'Imperial Palace' is a large hosta cultivar with unknown pollen parentage, derived from *Hosta* 'Pin Stripe Sister'. It is visually distinctive for its striking medio-variegation: a yellow leaf center bordered by a 2-inch-wide, medium green, slightly rippled margin, with a broadly ovate, cordate-based leaf that is moderately corrugated and dull on both surfaces.

In the Garden

'Imperial Palace' forms a mound-like clump reaching 26 inches (66.0 cm) in height and 48 inches (121.9 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for hostas, and its large, bold variegation makes it a strong specimen plant or accent in shaded borders. The green scapes, 20 to 22 inches (50.8 to 55.9 cm) tall, bear flowers typical of the genus. Its size precludes container cultivation for most settings.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing in garden settings.
