Overview
Registered in 2003 by V. Sellers and introduced by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Imperial Majesty' is a giant variegated cultivar derived from a cross between *H. 'Hirao Majesty'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Hirao Supreme'* (pollen parent). Its most distinctive features are the very shiny, bright green leaves with slightly rippled margins, combined with an upright, arching habit that gives the plant a substantial, architectural presence.
In the Garden
'Imperial Majesty' reaches a mature diameter of 44 inches (112 cm) and a height of 21 inches (53 cm), with scapes rising 46 to 52 inches (117 to 132 cm) above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for variegated hostas, and benefits from shelter from strong afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch. Its large, ovate leaves with cordate bases and prominent veining make it a strong specimen plant for woodland borders or as a focal point in shaded beds; it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry spells, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through appropriate barriers or deterrents.
