Overview
Registered in 1998 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Vanilla Cream', 'Ice Cream' is a small, rhizomatous cultivar distinguished by its variegated foliage of dark green with light green, slightly rippled margins. The leaves are cordate at the base, measuring 3.25 inches (8.3 cm) in both length and width, with seven pairs of veins and a slightly shiny texture on both surfaces.
In the Garden
Reaching a mature height of 9 inches (22.9 cm) and a spread of 12 inches (30.5 cm), 'Ice Cream' is suited to partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its small size and moderate growth rate make it appropriate for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container cultivation. Companion plants may include small ferns, *Heuchera*, or other low-growing shade perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Ice Cream' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, and protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
