Overview

Registered in 2004 by D. Van Eechaute as a sport of an unnamed parent, *Hosta* 'Essence of Summer' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, moderately corrugated leaves with medium green, flat margins. The foliage is dull on both surfaces, and the plant is believed by its registrant to be tetraploid.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches approximately 23 inches (58.4 cm) in height and 5.3 inches (13.5 cm) in diameter at maturity, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for variegated hostas, and is suitable for borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in typical hosta-growing zones. Its large, rounded leaves provide textural contrast when paired with finer-textured perennials such as ferns or astilbes.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor regularly and employ barriers or repellents as needed.
