Overview
Registered in 2004 by S. Asch, *Hosta* 'Candlewood' is a large, fast-growing variegated cultivar of unknown parentage. It is distinguished by its broadly ovate, medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a lightly cupped and corrugated texture, and a notable habit of standing upright in the morning before relaxing into a mound-like form by afternoon.
In the Garden
'Candlewood' reaches a mature spread of 72 inches (182.9 cm) and a height of 36 inches (91.4 cm), making it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders. It thrives in typical hosta-growing conditions of partial to full shade and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial leaf size and upright morning habit provide structural contrast in mixed plantings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor regularly and apply controls as needed.
