Overview
Registered in 2012, 'Cosmic Shine' is a large hosta cultivar derived from a cross between *H.* 'Josephine' and *H.* 'Neat Splash'. Its most distinctive feature is the exceptionally glossy foliage, with leaves that exhibit a very shiny surface on both the upper and lower sides, combined with dark green, slightly rippled margins.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 42 inches (106.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, where the shiny leaf surfaces reflect light effectively. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or in mixed shade borders, paired with ferns or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry spells, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, though the glossy leaf surface may offer slight resistance to slug feeding.
