Overview
Registered in 1978 by P. Aden, this small-sized hosta originated from a cross between *Hosta* 'Yellow Splash' (pod parent) and a *Hosta* 'Fortunei Robusta' hybrid (pollen parent). The cultivar is visually distinctive for its dark green leaves with creamy white margins, a pattern inherited from its parentage that creates a neat, defined variegation.
In the Garden
Reaching a mature height of 8 inches (20.3 cm) and a spread of 11 inches (27.9 cm), 'Neat Splash' is suited to the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with small ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Tiarella* for textural contrast. Its compact size makes it an excellent choice for troughs or small pots on shaded patios.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitor regularly and employ barriers or repellents as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
