Overview
Registered in 2003, 'Zydeco' is a large hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Sea Prize' (pod parent) and *H. hypoleuca* (pollen parent). The plant is visually distinctive for its dark blue-green, deeply corrugated leaves with narrow yellow margins and prominently white undersides, a trait inherited from *H. hypoleuca*.
In the Garden
'Zydeco' forms an upright, slow-growing clump reaching 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height and 31 inches (78.7 cm) in diameter. Its heavy-substance leaves are broadly ovate with cordate bases, deeply corrugated and moderately cupped, with 13 very prominent vein pairs on the underside. The leaf surface is slightly shiny above with a glaucous bloom beneath. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the yellow margins maintain their color without scorching. The green scapes rise 26 to 30 inches (66.0 to 76.2 cm) above the foliage. It pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials that contrast with its bold texture.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during establishment, as the large leaves are susceptible to wilting in dry conditions. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs may damage the leaves, though the heavy substance offers some resistance; deer will browse the foliage if accessible.
