Overview
Registered in 2008 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Lakeside Rocky Top', 'Zimmerman Thunder' was originated by M. Zilis and registered by S. Compton. This small-sized cultivar is distinguished by its heavily rippled, dark green leaf margins that contrast sharply with the very shiny upper surface, while the leaf centers present a lighter variegation; the leaves are notably large for the plant's overall dimensions.
In the Garden
'Zimmerman Thunder' forms a compact, mound-like clump reaching 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height and 10 inches (25.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or dwarf astilbes. Its small size and tidy habit make it suitable for container cultivation, rock gardens, or the front of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may be susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and use barriers or repellents as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
