Overview
Registered in 2009, *Hosta* 'Zany Janie' is a large, variegated cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, with *H.* 'Pin Stripe Sister' as its pod parent. Its most distinctive feature is the combination of a streaked leaf center with a medium green, heavily rippled margin approximately 0.5 inches (1.3 cm) wide, borne on a variegated scape.
In the Garden
'Zany Janie' forms a substantial clump reaching 62 inches (157.5 cm) in diameter and 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It is suited to partial to dappled shade, typical of most hostas, and its large, broadly ovate leaves with cordate bases and moderate waviness provide textural contrast when paired with finer-textured perennials such as ferns or heucheras. The 30-inch (76.2 cm) variegated scapes produce flowers that, while not the primary ornamental feature, contribute to the plant's overall presence.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Zany Janie' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate management measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
