Overview
Registered in 2001 by Japanese breeder H. Sugita, *Hosta* 'Zachary Taylor' is a large-sized cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, deeply corrugated leaves with green centers and wide, yellow-gold margins. The leaves are moderately cupped and slightly shiny on the upper surface, with a dull underside and 15 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature spread of 39 inches (99.1 cm) and a height of 27 inches (68.6 cm), with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its bold, textured foliage provides strong contrast when paired with finer-textured perennials such as ferns or astilbes. The light yellow scapes rise to 21 inches (53.3 cm) and bear lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are recommended, as both pests may damage the foliage.
