Overview
Registered in 1978 by Paul Aden, this small-sized hosta arose from a cross between *H.* 'Ogon Koba' (seed parent) and *H.* 'Chartreuse Wiggles' (pollen parent). 'Yellow Waves' is distinguished by its green leaves with light yellow, undulated margins, a color pattern that reverses the typical gold-centered, green-margined form found in many small hostas.
In the Garden
'Yellow Waves' reaches a mature spread of approximately 7 inches (17.8 cm) and a height of 4 inches (10.2 cm), making it suitable for the front of a border, rock gardens, or trough plantings. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, where its leaf margins hold their yellow coloration without scorching. Companion plants include small ferns, *Heuchera* cultivars, or miniature sedges; its compact size also makes it an excellent candidate for container culture.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly when grown in containers, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Yellow Waves' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor for slugs in damp conditions and consider protective measures if browsing pressure is high.
