Overview

Registered in 1993 by E. Smith and P. Ruh, 'Yellow River' is a giant hosta cultivar of unknown parentage, distinguished by its large, medium green leaves with wide, medium yellow, marbled margins and prominently rippled edges. The leaf blades reach 33 cm (13 in) in length and 25.4 cm (10 in) in width, with 13 vein pairs and a flat base.

In the Garden

'Yellow River' forms a substantial clump 127 cm (50 in) in diameter and 61 cm (24 in) in height, making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the yellow margins remain most vivid, and pairs well with ferns, brunnera, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its giant stature precludes container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Yellow River' is susceptible to slug and deer damage and benefits from protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
