Overview
Registered in 1999 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Patrician', this small cultivar is distinguished by its narrow, lance-shaped green leaves with heavy, rippled gold margins. The foliage measures 5 inches (12.7 cm) long and 1.75 inches (4.4 cm) wide, with three to four vein pairs, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a very shiny underside. The leaf base is tapered, and the scape, reaching 12 to 15 inches (30.5 to 38.1 cm) in height, is yellow.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'Yellow Ribbons' forms an upright clump 12 inches (30.5 cm) tall and 15 inches (38.1 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain brightest; excessive sun may scorch the leaf edges. Its small size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or containers, and it pairs well with fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may cause damage; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
