Overview
Registered in 2008 as a selfed seedling of *Hosta* 'Sea Prize', 'Yellow Prize' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its tricolored foliage: leaves emerge with yellow, green, and white streaking, framed by white, slightly rippled margins. The ovate leaves, measuring 5 inches (12.7 cm) long by 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide, bear 7 to 9 vein pairs and have a slightly shiny upper surface with a dull underside.
In the Garden
'Yellow Prize' forms a compact mound 9 inches (22.9 cm) tall and 18 inches (45.7 cm) wide, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to light shade with consistent moisture. Companion plants include small ferns, heucheras, or dwarf grasses that complement its restrained stature and variegated foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slug and deer resistance is not absolute, the small, firm leaves are less palatable than those of larger, thinner-leaved cultivars.
