Overview

Registered in 1999 as a sport of an unnamed parent, *Hosta* 'Yellow Flame' is a large cultivar distinguished by its yellow leaf centers with wide, green margins. The leaves reach 10 inches (25.4 cm) in length and 7 inches (17.8 cm) in width, with the green margin extending approximately 2 inches (5.1 cm) inward from the edge.

In the Garden

'Yellow Flame' performs best in partial to dappled shade, where the yellow centers remain bright without scorching. Mature clumps reach large dimensions, typically spreading 36 to 48 inches (91–122 cm) wide with a comparable height. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its bold foliage.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season to establish a deep root system. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Yellow Flame' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor for these pests and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
