Overview

Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Blue Mammoth', 'Woolly Mammoth' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves edged with a flat, medium gold margin approximately 0.75 inches (1.9 cm) wide. The broadly ovate leaves, reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in length and 9 inches (22.9 cm) in width, feature a cordate base and are covered with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, with moderate waviness and corrugation.

In the Garden

This slow-growing cultivar forms a substantial mound suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones. Its mature dimensions—large leaves on a spreading plant—make it an effective specimen or accent in woodland borders and shade gardens, where the gold margins remain stable without burning. Pair with fine-textured ferns or dark-leaved heucheras for contrast; its size precludes container use for most gardeners.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor regularly and employ barriers or repellents as needed.
