Overview
Registered in 1999, 'Wooden Nickel' is a sport of *Hosta* 'Abiqua Recluse' that produces a large, upright clump of blue-green leaves with wide, greenish-yellow margins. The foliage is distinguished by a cordate base, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a glaucous bloom on the underside.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 46 inches (117 cm) and a height of 21 inches (53 cm), with scapes rising 32 to 36 inches (81 to 91 cm). It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hostas, and its fast growth rate makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders. The large leaf size and upright habit allow it to pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials; it is not suited for containers due to its size.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are recommended for this cultivar in typical hosta-growing zones.
