Overview
Registered in 2013 as an open-pollinated seedling of *Hosta* 'Bright Lights', 'Winchester' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, blue-green leaves with broad, glaucous yellow margins. The foliage exhibits a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, with lightly corrugated texture and a cordate base, creating a substantial mound-like form.
In the Garden
'Winchester' reaches a mature height of 22 inches (55.9 cm) with a spread of 30 inches (76.2 cm), making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. Its fast growth rate and dense mound habit allow it to fill space effectively, pairing well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its blue-green and gold coloration. The large leaves, measuring 13 inches (33.0 cm) long and 11 inches (27.9 cm) wide, provide strong textural presence.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during establishment and throughout the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While typical hosta-growing zones are appropriate, note that deer and slugs may damage foliage, requiring protective measures in areas with high pest pressure.
