Overview
Registered in 2003 by C. Tompkins and introduced by P. & J. Ruh, *Hosta* 'Willamette' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar derived from *H. plantaginea* (pod parent) and *H.* 'Royal Standard' (pollen parent). Its distinguishing features include ovate leaves with light green, slightly rippled margins, a glossy underside, and large, frequent white flowers that bloom later than those of *H. plantaginea*.
In the Garden
'Willamette' forms an upright clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 29 inches (73.7 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its medium size makes it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Willamette' may require protection from slugs and deer in garden settings.
