Overview
Registered in 2001, 'Wild Blue Yonder' is a giant hosta cultivar resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Sea Prize' (pod parent) and *Hosta hypoleuca* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its large, prostrate, glaucous blue-green leaves edged with wide, heavily rippled greenish-yellow margins, combined with a fast growth rate that produces a substantial mound.
In the Garden
This cultivar reaches a mature size of approximately 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height and 52 inches (132.1 cm) in diameter, with upright to prostrate foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its bold leaf substance makes it suitable as a specimen or accent plant in larger borders or woodland gardens. The substantial leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or color.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While slugs may occasionally damage the leaves, the thick substance offers some resistance; deer browsing is a potential concern in areas with high deer pressure.
