Overview
Registered in 2002, this giant cultivar produces a massive clump of broadly ovate, deeply corrugated blue-green leaves with wide, greenish-yellow, slightly rippled margins. The leaf undersides bear a glaucous bloom, and the scape reaches 36 to 40 inches (91–102 cm) in height.
In the Garden
With a mature spread of 58 inches (147 cm) and height of 31 inches (79 cm), 'Whopper' requires ample space in the shade garden. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other large-leaved perennials. Its upright, moderate growth habit makes it suitable as a specimen or background plant in woodland borders.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most hostas.
