Overview

Registered in 1980 by P. Aden, this cultivar resulted from a cross between *Hosta* 'Flamboyant' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Fascination' (pollen parent). It is visually distinguished by its green leaves with white margins, which also exhibit a yellow streak within the white marginal zone, creating a tricolored effect on mature foliage.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'Whoopee' is a medium-sized cultivar, forming clumps approximately 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter and 16 inches (40.6 cm) in height. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and is suitable for borders, woodland gardens, or as a groundcover specimen. The 9-inch (22.9 cm) long by 7-inch (17.8 cm) wide leaves provide substantial texture, pairing well with ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials. Its compact habit also makes it appropriate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
