Overview
Registered in 1978 by P. Aden, this medium-sized cultivar was produced from a cross between *H. 'White Christmas'* (pod parent) and *H. 'Flamboyant'* (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its green leaves with white margins that transition through white, green, and gold tones, creating a tricolored effect on mature foliage.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'White Magic' forms a compact mound reaching 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height and 12 inches (30.5 cm) in diameter, with individual leaves measuring 6 inches (15.2 cm) long by 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide and bearing eight pairs of veins. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the variegation remains most stable, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its modest size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
