Overview
Registered in 1994 by J. Shugart and introduced by J. & B. Diesen, *Hosta* 'White Lightning' is a small sport of *H.* 'Janet' distinguished by its light green leaves with pure white, smooth margins. The margins measure 0.35 inches (0.9 cm) wide, creating a sharp contrast against the dull-surfaced, rounded leaf base.
In the Garden
This small hosta reaches 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and spreads to 18 inches (45.7 cm) in diameter, with a semi-upright growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and is well-suited to rock gardens, container plantings, or the front of shaded borders. Its compact size pairs effectively with small ferns, heucheras, or other miniature hostas.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even soil moisture, particularly during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'White Lightning' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor foliage and apply controls as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
