Overview
Registered in 2004 from European origins, *Hosta* 'White Knight' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar of unknown parentage, notable for its very shiny, flat leaves with medium to light green margins and a dull underside. It is distinguished from the similar 'Royal Standard' by this characteristic leaf texture and its highly fragrant flowers.
In the Garden
'White Knight' forms an upright, moderate-growing clump reaching 19 inches (48.3 cm) in height and 35 inches (88.9 cm) in diameter. Its 8-inch (20.3 cm) ovate leaves with tapered bases and nine prominent vein pairs make it suitable for mid-border positions in partial to full shade, where its glossy foliage contrasts well with finer-textured ferns or broad-leaved companions like *Heuchera*. The 17- to 20-inch (43.2 to 50.8 cm) green scapes bear very fragrant flowers, adding sensory interest to shaded beds.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Like most hostas, it may require protection from slugs and deer in garden settings.
