Overview
Registered in 2001 by H. Sugita, this medium-sized cultivar is a hybrid between *Hosta kiyosumiensis* and *H. pycnophylla*. Its most distinctive feature is the lance-shaped leaf with a snow-white back, contrasting with dark green margins that are slightly rippled and very shiny on the upper surface.
In the Garden
'White Heron' forms a mound-like clump reaching 23 inches (58.4 cm) in height and 43 inches (109.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its medium size suits it for mid-border positions or as a specimen beneath deciduous trees. The blue-green scapes, which are pendulous, rise 18 to 23 inches (45.7 to 58.4 cm) above the foliage.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods, particularly in the first growing season. Apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage the foliage, and deer are known to browse hostas; monitor and take protective measures as needed in the garden.
