Overview

Registered in 2010 by R. Kuenster, *Hosta* 'Whirlybird' is a medium-sized cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its blue-green foliage that transitions to dark green by late summer. The broadly ovate, lightly cupped leaves feature slightly rippled blue margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and a glaucous bloom beneath, with 9 to 11 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Whirlybird' performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and reaches a mature spread of approximately 21 inches (53.3 cm) with an upright habit of 19 inches (48.3 cm). Its moderate growth rate and medium size make it suitable for mid-border positions, woodland gardens, or shaded foundation plantings, where it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The plant is not suited for container culture due to its medium stature.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer climates, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through cultural controls or barriers where pressure is high.
