Overview
Registered in 2003 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Whirlwind', 'Whirling Dervish' forms a medium-sized, mound-like clump reaching 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 45 inches (114.3 cm) in diameter. Its broadly ovate, dark green leaves are distinguished by 1-inch (2.5 cm) wide, creamy white, flat margins that remain brightly colored throughout the growing season.
In the Garden
'Whirling Dervish' performs best in partial to full shade, where its variegated foliage maintains contrast. The moderate growth rate and 24- to 36-inch (61.0 to 91.4 cm) scapes make it suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in woodland gardens. It pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials, and its compact, rounded habit suits larger containers.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Whirling Dervish' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
