Overview

Registered in 1999 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Paul's Glory', 'Wheaton Blue' is a large hosta cultivar distinguished by its broad, cordate leaves with medium blue-green margins and a prominent glaucous bloom on both surfaces. The foliage, reaching 10 inches (25.4 cm) in length and 7 inches (17.8 cm) in width, displays 12 to 13 vein pairs and forms a dense, mound-like clump.

In the Garden

'Wheaton Blue' attains a mature spread of 50 inches (127.0 cm) and a height of 26 inches (66.0 cm), with scapes rising 24 to 40 inches (61.0 to 101.6 cm) above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green coloration remains most intense, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its moderate growth rate and substantial size make it suitable as a specimen plant or for use in mixed border plantings.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Wheaton Blue' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
