Overview
Registered in 2003 by German originator H. Müssel, with P. & J. Ruh as registrants, *Hosta* 'Weihenstephan' is a small, upright cultivar distinguished by its variegated foliage: dark green, slightly rippled margins frame a broad lance-shaped leaf with a dull surface on both sides. The plant produces white flowers on green scapes reaching 66.0 cm (26 in) in height, contrasting with the compact mound of foliage.
In the Garden
This small hosta reaches a mature diameter of 45.7 cm (18 in) and a height of 35.6 cm (14 in), with a moderate growth rate and upright habit. It is suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container cultivation, performing best in partial to full shade typical of hosta-growing zones. Its compact size and variegated leaves make it an effective accent plant when paired with fine-textured shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during dry periods, applying a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Weihenstephan' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so monitoring and protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
