Overview
Registered in 2007 as a sport of an unidentified parent, *Hosta* 'Wave Runner' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its intensely wavy, blue-green leaves with wide, heavily rippled, greenish-yellow to yellow margins. The leaf blades are ovate with cordate bases, measure up to 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide, and bear 11 to 13 vein pairs; the upper surface is dull, while the underside is dull with a glaucous bloom. Purple scapes rise to 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height.
In the Garden
'Wave Runner' forms a flat, spreading mound 21 inches (53.3 cm) tall and 52 inches (132.1 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green leaf centers and yellow margins hold their color most reliably; too much sun may cause the margins to bleach. This cultivar's bold texture and spreading habit make it suitable as a groundcover or for the front to middle of a shaded border, paired with ferns, heucheras, or other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Wave Runner' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
