Section classI-7

Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' registered in 2000, 'Watercolours' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its large, heavily textured leaves with green centers and mottled golden yellow margins. The leaf surface is very shiny above and slightly shiny beneath, with 11 to 13 vein pairs and a cordate base.

In the Garden

'Watercolours' reaches 37.4 inches (95.0 cm) in height and 61 inches (154.9 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain most distinct; excessive sun may cause marginal bleaching. Its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of shaded borders, paired with ferns or *Heuchera* for contrast.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor regularly and use barriers or repellents as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
