Overview

Registered in 2006, *Hosta* 'Wasabi' is a small-sized cultivar of unknown parentage distinguished by its green leaves with greenish-yellow flat margins, creating a muted gold border effect. The plant forms a compact mound 9.4 inches (23.9 cm) in diameter and 3.9 inches (9.9 cm) high, with dull-surfaced, broadly ovate leaves measuring 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) long and 2.4 inches (6.1 cm) wide, each bearing 7 to 9 pairs of veins.

In the Garden

'Wasabi' is suited to partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its small size makes it appropriate for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. The slow growth rate and compact dimensions (under 10 inches across) also render it suitable for container cultivation. Companion plants might include small ferns, *Heuchera*, or other diminutive shade perennials that do not overwhelm its modest stature.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, though the small, dull leaves are less attractive to slugs than larger, glossier cultivars.
