Overview

Registered in 1988 by E. Smith and the British Hosta and Hemerocallis Society (BHHS), 'Wagtail' is a small cultivar derived from the *H.* Tardiana Group. It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with blue margins, a compact, low-growing habit, and a notably short scape that may reach only 9 inches (22.9 cm) or less.

In the Garden

This small hosta reaches a mature diameter of 16 inches (40.6 cm) and a height of 6 inches (15.2 cm), making it suitable for the front of a border, rock gardens, or as a groundcover in partial to full shade. Its compact size and blue foliage pair well with fine-textured companions such as ferns, *Heuchera*, or small sedges. 'Wagtail' is also well suited for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
